On Art Poletical and economic obsession seem to create a lot of confusion about art in our culture. When fine artists complain about not being able to make a living from fine art or folk artists denegrate their own creative work I wish that more folk would think about art in the way that I do. So here are my thoughts in order to try and get that to happen. None of these thoughts are original, but I find them worthwile and think that they lead to some perspective. Feel free to mail me any thoughts you might have. Art is just a form of communication with artistry and artistry is the skill one uses. There is a common denominator of value in all art forms. The value of art is that it enhances perception. Sometimes, like with a novel, that perception might be about story. With abstract art the perception may be about color or the form of the canvas or the placement of a certain kind of thing in a museum. With sculpture it may be about relationships in space. But in some way the common denominator is perception. So art is a form of communication that enhances perception in some way. The artist could enhance their own perception by the process of creating or they could be trying to effect the perceptions of others. Someone can be an artist just by allowing their perceptions to change as they walk through life just by being open minded and paying attention to the world. That person is an artist and his or her artistry is in the skill of how he or she adjusts to the world. |
